TOUR DESCRIPTION

Day 1
You will be collected from your Chiang Mai hotel or guest house and we will proceed to drive towards the Mae Tang area. On route we will stop by at the orchid and butterfly farm where you can drop in to see the colorful Thai orchids and butterfly species. Our next stop on route will be at Mae Malai Market where our guide will buy some fresh food supplies for the trip into the hills. Before embarking on the trek we will take lunch at a Shan village then commence the first leg of the trek which is a good 2.5 hour hike up challenging trails to a picturesque Black Lahu village situated on a mountain top. On route we will stop for a rest at a small jungle waterfall. The Lahu village will be the destination for the night where you can spend late afternoon and evening in the village and kick back and relax after the days trek. Your guide will prepare your evening meal and you can spend the rest of the evening relaxing with your fellow trekkers over a few drinks.

Overnight
Simple bamboo dorm accommodation in Black Lahu village

Day 2
The mornings up in the hills are refreshingly cool which you will appreciate before working up a sweat with the mornings trek. Breakfast will be had in the village before we embark on the mornings trek towards the waterfall. Trekking time will be around 2 hours and at the waterfall we can take a break for a refreshing swim. The trek will then proceed towards the river through the jungle and hill tribe farmland in the foothills to the elephant camp. Here at the camp you will have lunch and will get to spend half an hour interaction time with the elephants and get to feed them. After lunch it will be time to proceed to the river for the white white water rafting trip. You will get to raft around 5km of some great rapids (the best an biggest rapids can usually be found in the wetter months between may and November) but the rafting is still fun all year round. The river calms in the lower stretches and here will will change to bamboo rafts where you can kick back and relax while the great scenery passes you by or feel free to pick up a pole and try piloting the raft yourself! Our day will finish with the boarding of the transport for the drive back to Chiang Mai

ELEPHANT UPDATE Dec 2016: A choice is now offered of elephant feeding or elephant riding. If you prefer not to ride elephants you can take the choice to feed them instead

1 Safety
Trekking in this part of Thailand is very safe and accidednts are very rare but still safety is always a priority. 1 What to wear
Wear light clothes as trekking in this part of the world can be hot and sweaty work. Shorts, T shirt and a sun hat are ideal. Long trousers are OK as they will protect your lower legs more but will be hotter to wear. Although hiking boots aren’t a necessity at least a sturdy pair of running shoes should be worn. Some people trek with sandals but they do leave your feet open to be scratched by vegetation also flip flops (thongs) aren’t appropriate as they don't provide enough support. In the rainy season from April to October bring a rain coat. Bring a change of clothes for after the rafting. Please be sensitive about your dress in the hill tribe village short and t shirts are OK but nothing to revealing please.

1 What to bring
A small rucksack/day sack, shorts and T shirt for trekking (long trousers if you prefer), A change of clothes (shorts & t shirt) especially useful in the wet season to change into at the end of the day, warm jumper/fleece for cool season, Walking shoes, socks, swimming suit, small towel/sarong, insect spray, sun cream, raincoat (rainy season), some toilet paper, one bottle of water. Some money for drinks and hill tribe crafts. Bring a change of clothes to change into after the whitewater rafting…..You will get wet! No bedding or sleeping bags are required as we supply all the necessary sleeping equipment.
